Hello, it's Jane again. This time, let's talk about lotus silk, the rarest and most luxurious textile in the world.

Lotus textile is a natural microfiber, environmentally friendly textile, and has unique properties. The textile of lotus is like a cross between silk and linen. Very soft and breathable. However, unlike silk or linen, it does not wrinkle easily. It is also stain resistant and due to the plant's aquatic habitat, it is waterproof and dries quickly when wet. Cool in summer and warm in winter, lotus textile can be worn all year round.

Lotus textile is only produced on a small scale in Cambodia, Myanmar, and more recently Vietnam. This natural fiber can only be created by a few skilled artisans around the world. However, making this "lotus silk" is not easy. It takes two months to extract enough lotus silk for one scarf, and the final product costs 10 times more than regular silk.

Each thread of lotus silk is extracted from the stem of a lotus flower. By picking and picking the stems by hand, you can extract the silk inside. Each stem contains a tiny amount of thin sticky fibers that must be rolled together and dried. A large scarf requires about 9,200 stem thread and takes about two months for one person to make.

The lotus thread must be processed within 24 hours while still wet. Otherwise, the lotus thread will break. Therefore, harvesting must be done daily. And lotuses can only be harvested between April and October. After the hard work of extracting these fibers, they are also very delicate. Once dry, it is delicately rolled up by hand and placed in the machine.

Lotus fibers are fragile, but once woven, they are as durable as regular silk. However, a 25cm scarf sells for 20,000 yen, making it extremely valuable. The final product is different from other fibers. Soft like silk, breathable like linen, and slightly stretchy.

Their luxurious features make them popular with tourists looking for unusual souvenirs. It has also recently been picked up by international fashion brands looking for new luxury textiles. However, the scale is limited as there are still very few people trained in lotus thread manufacturing.
